Matsuya Releases a Buzzworthy New Dish! Heading In for the "Black Mapo Tofu"

As a huge fan of mapo tofu, I couldn't pass up this new menu item from Matsuya, so I went to try it right away.

My target this time was the newly released "Black Mapo Tofu." Prominently advertised in-store as featuring a strikingly deep black appearance, I eagerly waited to see how it turned out.

Tasting the "Black Mapo Tofu (No Salad)"! Authentic Spice, Rich Umami, and My Honest Thoughts

What I ordered this time was the "Black Mapo Tofu Rice Set (without salad)" (790 yen, tax included).

I placed my order via mobile order on the official Matsuya app. I also redeemed a free potato salad coupon I received during my last visit to add a side dish. Plus, this transaction brought my Matsuya Points membership status up to Gold Rank (4.0% rewards rate). Taking advantage of these handy coupons and rewards points is definitely one of the perks of dining smart at Matsuya.

On the tray I picked up was the Black Mapo Tofu served in a deep bowl, rice, miso soup, the complimentary potato salad, and a packet of "GABAN Japanese Sansho Pepper."

Looking at the bowl of Black Mapo Tofu, the striking dark brown sauce made with fermented black beans (douchi), sweet bean sauce (tianmianjiang), and mala sauce immediately stands out, ringed by a vibrant layer of red chili oil.

Taking a spoonful, there is a solid, authentic kick of heat, followed by deep layers of richness and savory umami. The tofu is silky smooth and thoroughly coated in the thick sauce. Sprinkling the accompanying pepper adds a refreshing aroma and tingling numbness, sharpening the overall flavor profile even further.

While the flavor was remarkably authentic and delicious, as I kept eating, one honest thought crossed my mind: "Is there really any point in serving this separately from the rice?"

With such a rich, full-bodied sauce and genuine heat, serving it directly over the rice as a "Black Mapo Tofu Rice Bowl" (Donburi) and digging in heartily with a spoon would bring out its appeal much more directly. While there is a set option that includes fresh salad, I personally felt choosing the salad-free set was the right call. It's best enjoyed simply—dumping the black mapo over the warm rice and devouring it without any distractions.

[Summary] Perfect for a Punch of Heat and Richness! Eating It Rice Bowl Style Is the Way to Go

Matsuya's "Black Mapo Tofu" sets itself apart from standard chain restaurant side dishes, delivering an authentic experience packed with genuine spicy heat and complex umami.

Its bold, robust flavors make it an ideal pairing when you crave a hearty bowl of white rice. If you are planning to check it out, I recommend ordering the set without salad, pouring the mapo tofu straight over your rice, and devouring it bowl-style with a spoon.
