The other day, I had the chance to try the limited-edition menu item (200,000 servings only) at "Katsuya," so this time, I’d like to summarize my experience in a blog post.
Tasting the Black Miso Chicken Cutlet!
Here’s what I had this time: the Black Miso Chicken Cutlet. Just from its appearance, you can tell it’s rich and indulgent—oozing that "junk food" vibe, making it the perfect B-grade gourmet dish that Katsuya is known for! This kind of bold and distinctive presentation is something only Katsuya can pull off, don’t you think? (laughs)
It really gives the impression that they understand their position in the market and know exactly what their customers expect—and the customers, in turn, come looking for that very experience. In a way, it’s almost like a relationship built on trust.
…Or am I overthinking it?! (laughs)
The Unique Sense of Exclusivity That Comes with a Limited-Edition Menu
The Unique Sense of Exclusivity That Comes with a Limited-Edition Menu
Typically, seasonal or limited-time menu items are featured on the cover of the regular menu. However, since this was a quantity-limited menu, a separate, dedicated menu was prepared just for it. This makes things easier for the restaurant as well—once the item is sold out, they can simply remove the menu card.
For this special limited-quantity menu, there were two options: a rice bowl and a set meal. Without hesitation, I went for the Black Miso Chicken Cutlet Set Meal (¥759 including tax).
And of course, when you visit Katsuya, you can’t skip the tonjiru (pork miso soup)! If you opt for the rice bowl and add tonjiru separately, the price ends up being almost the same as the set meal. So, in the end, it just comes down to personal preference and ease of eating.
Personally, I prefer set meals because I like to enjoy a balanced combination of rice and side dishes.
My Thoughts After Actually Trying It Now, let’s talk about the actual taste!
And Here It Is, Freshly Served!
…It looks even blacker than in the photos! (laughs)
If someone were served this without any context, they might think, "Wait, did they overcook it and burn it?" (laughs) But don’t worry—there’s absolutely no burnt smell at all!
Now, let’s dig in and see how it actually tastes…
A rich and bold flavor that absolutely requires rice!!
Just as its appearance suggests, the flavor is intensely rich. The black miso brings out a deep umami, with a slight hint of sweetness. At first, I was enjoying it as is, but after a while, I started thinking, "Maybe I want to change up the flavor a bit..."
That’s where the egg comes in! In the second half, I mixed the egg in, and it perfectly balanced out my initial impression of “maybe this is a bit too rich?” Thanks to that, I was able to enjoy it all the way to the last bite!
Limited to 200,000 Servings—Get It While You Can!
Limited to 200,000 Servings—Don’t Wait Too Long! This menu item is limited to 200,000 servings, but exactly how many have been sold so far? Only Katsuya knows.
What’s certain, though, is this: If you’re interested, you’d better act fast—before it’s gone!
What About the Price?
The Final Bill?
Originally ¥759 (tax included), but with a ¥100 discount coupon, I paid just ¥659!
For this price, including tonjiru, it’s an absolute steal!
If you get the chance, be sure to dive into the world of Katsuya and give it a try!
