【Taste Review】Tried Sukiya’s New Product: "Ontama Black Bibimbap Gyudon"!

The other day, I tried Sukiya's new menu item, so this time, I’d like to share my thoughts on it in this blog.

I tried Sukiya's new menu item, the "Ontama Black Bibimbap Gyudon"!

This time, I had the "Ontama Black Bibimbap Gyudon". Sukiya already offers a variety of gyudon options, and this new menu item is a fresh addition. Gyudon is delicious on its own, but the combination of different ingredients and seasonings brings new flavors to discover, which is one of its biggest appeals. Plus, it's great that you can enjoy these unique variations at an affordable price.

With that in mind, my curiosity got the best of me—I wanted to find out "What does it taste like?"—so I decided to visit a Sukiya restaurant and try it myself!

Ordering Process

After arriving at the restaurant, I checked the menu on the tablet. I noticed that there were variations without "Ontama" (soft-boiled egg) or without "Black", which apparently refers to the addictive seaweed topping. I debated for a moment, but since the full version with both Ontama and Black was reasonably priced at 740 yen (tax included), I decided to go with the standard "Ontama Black Bibimbap Gyudon".

By the way, unlike Matsuya, where miso soup is included with most meals, at Sukiya, it costs extra. So, I ordered a bowl separately for 110 yen. This made me realize again how nice it is that Matsuya offers miso soup for free with most menu items. Even though it's just 110 yen, I couldn't help but hesitate a little before adding it to my order. Am I the only one who feels this way?

Tasting Time! Ontama Black Bibimbap Gyudon

And here it is!

According to the official website, the gochujang (Korean chili paste) is served separately, but in reality, both the "Black" (addictive seaweed) and "Ontama" (soft-boiled egg) were also provided separately. This is probably to accommodate other menu variations.

The toppings are incredibly rich, including daikon and carrot namul, spinach, and kimchi—a great variety of ingredients! The colorful presentation is visually appealing and makes the dish even more appetizing.

I immediately added the "Black" seaweed, Ontama, and gochujang to the gyudon, gave it a light mix, and dug in!

How does it taste?

The spicy gyudon, packed with plenty of toppings, is incredibly satisfying! Each ingredient stands out, offering a different texture and flavor with every bite. The crispiness of the namul, the slight tanginess of the kimchi, the rich creaminess of the soft-boiled egg, and the spicy kick of the gochujang all blend perfectly together. Thanks to this well-balanced combination, I enjoyed every bite and finished the dish without getting tired of the flavors!

Summary

Although it’s a "variation gyudon," the price is slightly higher at over 700 yen for a regular size. However, I felt it was well worth the cost. In fact, considering the satisfaction it offers, it might even be a great deal!

If you're curious, I highly recommend trying the "Ontama Black Bibimbap Gyudon" at your nearest Sukiya. You might just discover a new way to enjoy gyudon!
