French-style × Japanese cuisine!? Tried Matsuya's new creamy sauce menu item.

The other day, I had the chance to try a newly released menu item from Matsuya, so this time I’m going to share that experience on my blog.

This time, I tried the “Shrimp with Plenty of Newburg Sauce.” Although I’ve never been to France, as someone with a sweet tooth who doesn’t like spicy food, I was very curious about how the creamy sauce would taste and how well it would pair with rice. By the way, until April 1st, a ¥50 discount coupon is available through the official app, so if you’re interested, now’s a great time to try it out while it’s still a good deal.

This time, I placed my order through the official app using mobile ordering. After confirming that the price had been reduced to ¥830 with the ¥50 discount, I proceeded to the checkout.

As of March 2025, paying with PayPay is a great deal if your total is over ¥800. There’s an ongoing campaign where you can earn PayPay points equivalent to 10% of your purchase. Since the amount of savings can vary just by changing your payment method, it’s definitely worth taking advantage of this kind of information.

This time, the regular price of the menu item was ¥880, but with the coupon, it was reduced to ¥830. I also had 30 Matsu-Bento points, so my actual payment was ¥800. However, the PayPay points were granted based on the original price of ¥880, so I received 88 points. In March, if your total exceeds ¥800, PayPay is clearly the way to go.

And here’s the actual dish that was served.
Although it’s been adapted in a Matsuya style, the combination of French-origin “Newburg sauce” with traditional Japanese miso soup really showcases Matsuya’s unique flair (haha).

When I actually tasted it, the creamy flavor felt like something that might divide opinions.
To be more specific, I think sweet-tooth and spicy-food lovers would have quite different impressions. In a way, it’s a dish where personal preference really stands out.
Since I have a sweet tooth, I thoroughly enjoyed the combination of the creamy sauce with rice. There was more shrimp than I expected, and the springy texture was quite memorable.

I still don’t know exactly what authentic French Newburg sauce tastes like, but this version was right up my alley. It made me want to try the original someday.

All in all, while the “Shrimp with Plenty of Newburg Sauce” may not be everyone’s cup of tea, I’d say it’s definitely worth trying if you’re curious.
Make sure to take advantage of the ¥50 discount coupon while it’s available!
